My dear Mr Chesson,

I was very glad to see again your handwriting, for I can say you have never ceased to have a good share in my thoughts and grateful remembrance.

As to the point on which you express some alarm, I have had no notice from our stations of any fact or rumour that might give it some appearance of reality. It would be an outrageous scheme indeed that would deliver the Basutos to the tender mercies of the Boers after all that has taken place. I cannot bring my mind to suppose that any one can have entertained such a thought.

My brother in law, Rev H.M. Dyke, who has been more than 30 years a missionary among the Basutos in connection with our Society, will be in London in about twelve days and shall call on you.
