My dear Mr Chesson,

The enclosed petition my brother wishes published, but as the Morning ‘Star’ now est I thought it best to ask the edt of the ‘Times’ to publish it. I however have no confidence in that direction, therefore have sent it too, to ‘John Bull.’

You can also make use of it.

My brother says there is great dissatisfaction with Ld Granville’s despatch for the withdrawal of troops. But remarks, ‘people forget that it is exactly the policy which the colony itself advocated for 4 or 5 years, they only changed their minds six months ago, and now they blame Ld Granville for doing what they have been asking for. My own opinion is that Ld G has taken the right course.’ The natives had not seen Ld G’s despatch, it only reached NZ in Jany. Nor had they up to the 17th Jany heard anything of its contents. Hence the remarkable similarity between subject matter is trange. It was sent to the Govr at Auckland quite in time for the mail. I wonder if it has made its official appearance.

Yours truly
Charles Hadfield
