Dear Mr Chesson,

Had the ‘Star’ been in existence I should have asked you to admit a few lines on the subject of the late Maori execution. My brother seems to wish that you should investigate the case as he looks upon it as a most inexpedient, unwise, and unjust affair. If you wish I will relate what he says.

The recent judgement in the Manawatu case you know he thinks equally unjust and unwise. Resistance to the survey (as with Waitara block) has been made, and under the advise of their lawyer.

The talk about peace he looks upon as a make believe, Featherstone and Bell returning in the hopes of obtaining troops.

Yours very truly
Charles Hadfield

F.W. Chesson Esq
