Natal Mercury’ Office
Durban, Jan 4 1874

My dear Mr Chesson,

We are greatly stirred in Natal by the success that has attended Colenso’s machinations. I never thought that he could stoop to secret slander, but he has now done this on two occassions, … the articles in the English press as … of his so-called ‘bluebook’ we can but conclude that it is as remarkable an example of implicit or alleged … as his secret pamphlet here was. He need never come back to Natal where his reputation for truthfulness, fairness and loyalty is forever gone.
