Dear Sir,

We all paid a visit to Mr Ashly on Friday last and he will not advance us the money (£30) pounds (which was proposed by you and Miss Weale) unless you or Miss Weale is responsible for that amount. Mr Ashly read your letter to him, where you state that you will not be responsible for that amount, he told us that he would advance us any amount on your responsibility.

Thanks very much for all yours and Miss Weale kindness for what both of you have done for us and I do think Mr Chesson you can trust to our Maori friends’ honesty to repay your money that we received from you for ourselves. We don’t like to walk about without money for our pockets.

I remain,
Yours faithfully
S.D. Taiwhanga
